Taipan Tiger Girls / Primitive Calculators / Informatics
The Tote, 71 Johnston Street (Cnr Johnston + Wellington), Collingwood
*Emah will be playing this gig as the nastysynth component of Primitive Calculators
Earlier this year this year Warner Music Australia put out the fantastic compilation of underground electronic music: CLOSED CIRCUITS: AUSTRALIA ALTERNATIVE ELECTRONIC MUSIC OF THE 70S & 80S VOL.1. You may have noticed a few of the It Records gang featured on it (The Metronomes, Primitive Calculators, Ollie Olsen / WhirlyWirld, Primitive Calculators). We thought we'd throw a little show showcasing what some of these amazing artists are up to right now.
TAIPAN TIGER GIRLS This three-piece instrumental outfit is composer, producer and all-round electric statesman Ollie Olsen, who has teamed up with experimental drummer and synth obsessive Mat Watson (Other Places), and feedback guitar droner Lisa MacKinney (Mystic Eyes/ Hospital Pass). When Lisa, Mat and Ollie play together as Taipan Tiger Girls, long and beautiful walls of psychedelic noise ensue. These are explosive, volcanic, unpredictable, and endlessly exhilarating. Taipan Tiger Girls have been thrilling Melbourne audiences in recent years if you have never experienced their live assault, now is definitely the time.
PRIMITIVE CALCULATORS Ever cantankerous noise punk renegades Primitive Calculators are evolving at a rapid rate. Last year saw their first release with It Records "On Drugs" a soul inspired boogie rock banger that had heads boppin' and hips swinging. The upcoming album of the same name is an incursion into pop territory, a violent and jagged edge kind of pop to be sure, vibrant and exciting. They're really killing it live right now and in the current climate, their angst-ridden ire is a balm for all our angry souls.
INFORMATICS What a rare treat to have the absolutely amazing Informatics on the line-up. This seminal post-punk electronic group one of my favourite early 80's Aussie releases: their Ep Dezinformatsiya. After several dormant decades, the Informatics reformed in 2012 and have been playing shows and have released a live tape with Sabbatical Records in 2104. Rather than rehash their post-punk roots the group evolved their approach. Incorporating contemporary technologies alongside the analogue synthesisers of yesteryear to produce a sound that reflects the maturity of the performers, but that also acknowledges and cites the progression of electronic music since their inception.
We are also lucky to have the curator of the Closed Circuits compilation David Nichols on board to spin some 70's and 80's Aussie electronic rarities in between bands.
Copies of the compilation along with an extensive merch table of gear from all the bands and their contemporaries will be available to purchase on the night.
It's going to be a special night, see you there.
